How a Battery Changes the System
A complete solar-plus-storage retrofit may add:

AC coupling is common for existing solar because it can preserve more of the installed system. Enphase notes that AC-coupled batteries tend to be easier to add to existing solar.
The design still must confirm solar-inverter behavior, metering, controller compatibility, backup-circuit limits, and communication.
DC-coupled redesign
A DC-coupled design routes solar into a compatible battery or hybrid inverter before electricity is converted for the home. It can reduce conversion steps, but an existing system may require inverter replacement, string redesign, rapid-shutdown components, or other changes.
DC coupling can be attractive when the existing inverter is near replacement, the homeowner wants a major solar upgrade, or the selected battery platform supports an efficient integrated design.
Neither architecture is automatically best. The existing equipment and project goals decide.
What Must Be Inspected Before Adding a Battery?
