Commercial solar systems in Florida can benefit from several major incentives:

  • A 30% federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) for business solar installations

  • A Florida sales tax exemption on solar equipment purchases

  • A property tax exemption/abatement: non-residential systems may receive an 80% exemption on added value

  • Net metering through Florida utilities like FPL for systems up to 2 MW

2. Can my business in St. Lucie County participate in net metering?

Yes. FPL allows commercial customers to install solar systems up to 2 MW and receive net metering credits.

  • Your system must be approved and interconnected

  • It should not exceed ~115% of your past year’s energy usage

  • Credits roll over monthly; excess credits may be compensated annually at a lower rate

3. How long will it take for a typical commercial solar installation in St. Lucie County to pay for itself?

Most businesses in Florida see a payback period of 5–7 years, depending on system size, utility rates, and available incentives.

4. Will adding solar panels increase my property taxes?

No. Florida offers up to 80% property tax exemption on the added value from solar systems for commercial properties.

However, local variations may apply, so check with your local tax authority.

5. What roof or structural requirements apply to commercial solar in Florida?

  • Must withstand Florida wind loads (many systems rated for 175+ mph)

  • Roof should be in good condition with sufficient load capacity

  • Systems near the coast must resist salt-air corrosion

  • Clear access to sunlight is critical for ROI

6. Is battery storage required for a commercial solar system?

Not required, but recommended for:

  • Power backup during outages

  • Peak demand shifting

  • Business continuity in storm-prone areas

7. Are there financing options for commercial solar installations?

Yes. Options include:

  • $0-down solar leases or PPAs

  • Low-interest business solar loans

  • Use of tax credits and depreciation to improve ROI

8. Will my business operations be disrupted during installation?

Typically no. Installation is planned to minimize disruption. Most projects are completed in 1–2 weeks post-permitting, depending on system size.

9. Does my system need to be new to qualify for incentives?

Yes. The system must be new and placed in service to qualify for the 30% federal tax credit and state incentives. Older or second-hand systems are not eligible.

10. How much energy can a commercial solar system generate in Florida?

A 100 kW system can generate approximately 130,000–160,000 kWh/year, depending on location and installation quality.
Florida’s solar resource supports strong production potential.

Yay Blue Energy Electric to the rescue! We have had a terrible experience with the original installer of our solar panels and could not get them to return calls or provide service… Blue Energy immediately answered my call and knew exactly what was needed to fix the problem . Very professional and committed to Resolve issues. Gabi was most helpful and was able to answer all my concerns over the phone. The repair cost was reasonable. The work completed as promised.

I was really pleased with the job that Blue Energy Electric did for me on my solar panel installation repair. I had a really bad experience with the company that originally installed it and was worried that I would not be able to have the work covered by warranty without going back to them. Dave from Blue Energy Electric came and took a look and sorted out everything and he managed to do so under that same warranty without an extra charge to me. He was professional, friendly and efficient but most importantly completely honest and trustworthy, something I was not used to in previous dealings with the solar company that installed my solar system. I cannot give this company a higher recommendation. Job well done thank you!!!
